Class: Spring Cleaning With Young Living

Why Young Living?

Young Living has what we call the Seed-to-Seal guarantee. Seed-to-Seal is from the time the seed is sourced until the oil is sealed in the bottle. They control every aspect of their production line, from planting the seed, cultivating the plants, distilling, testing, and bottling/sealing the oils. Young Living applies the most rigorous quality controls possible to ensure that you are receiving essential oils exactly the way nature intended. Young Living 100% pure therapeutic grade essential oils are backed by their seed-to-seal guarantee.

Young Living does not use pesticides or toxins on their crops, they treat them with their own essential oils. Here you can learn all about this promise and see the various farms worldwide. Young Living invites visitors too, which is abnormal for such a large company! Many companies do not allow patrons to come and view their operations – you just have to take their word on it. Young Living invites everyone to come tour the farms, distilleries, and even participate in planting, harvesting and distilling!

Young Living also has a large selection of oils! This includes 85 single oils, 87 blend oils, 28 dietary blends, 5 roll-ons, 8 massage oils. Plus, many personal care products such as shampoo and conditioner, lotions, toothpaste etc.!

Young Living also recently received the Better Business Bureau A+ rating!

So cool.

What are essential oils and how do I safely use them?

If you aren’t familiar with essential oils, you might be wondering what in the world are they? You’ve probably heard your friends talk about them, or seen them floating around the internet, so let’s break it down!

Essential oils are the aromatic, volatile liquids distilled from plants. The oil can be obtained from the roots, seeds, shrub, flowers, leaves and trees and bring health and healing to the body. The chemistry is extremely complex and may consist of hundreds of different and unique chemical compounds. Essential oils were mankind’s first medicine and are in fact mentioned throughout Scripture.

Essential oils are very complex and very powerful which is why they are able to reach every part of our body on a cellular level. The fragrance of the oils work on the limbic system in the brain, where emotions are stored, and can help relax and clear the mind as well as release emotional trauma. Essential oils can have profound physiological and psychological affects. The essential oils from Young Living are all therapeutic grade oils that can be diffused, applied topically, or ingested. An all-natural way to help your body stay healthy, the way it was intended to be.

Safety is important when it comes to using essential oils. It’s easy to get overwhelmed with all of the information available, but using common sense and starting gradually will help ease any sort of intimidation you might feel as you begin using essential oils in your everyday life.

Store essential oils in a cool, dark place with lids tightly closed (and always out of reach of children). Always use and store essential oils in glass containers, especially when drinking them in water, since most plastic products contain chemicals that can be broken down by the oil.

Citrus oils are photosensitive. When applied to skin, they may cause a rash or dark pigmentation on skin when exposed to UV rays or direct sunlight within 1-2 days after application.

Essential oils should never be applied to the eyes or inside the ears. Should irritation or accidental contact with eyes occur, never use water to clear the essential oils (they are not water-soluble). Instead use a V6 vegetable oil complex or other carrier oil (such as coconut oil or vitamin E oil) to cleanse the area and reduce discomfort. You’ll also want to keep carrier oils (like coconut, olive, vitamin e, sweet almond oil, etc.) on hand for dilution when necessary.

Again, these are just general high notes on safety and usage information. Essential oils are an amazing, natural way to approach health and wellness for you and your family, but because of Young Living’s purity and grade of oils, they should be used with knowledge and respect. This is said not to scare you, but for you to realize that they do work and can successfully be implemented into your family’s daily life with common sense. It is our hope that you’ll start this journey and discover the ability to use natural resources to treat yourself and your family. You won’t regret it!

Toxins and harsh cleaners

What are toxins? Toxins are harmful substances found in the environment. Things like snake venom, varieties of poison, and other disease-causing agents that are found in far too many products used in everyday life. Often times they are derived from plants and animals and then so chemically altered that the original quality is changed. Things like cleaners you can get at the store have altered substances in them to get the cleaning results desired.

When cleaning, we often use spray bottles and liquids that enter the air we breathe and sometimes get on our skin in the process of say, just cleaning our bathroom. When chemicals and toxins from our cleaning supplies get on our skin, they can only respond in a limited number of ways, the first of which is a general response to any irritating chemical or physical agent; inflammation. This is a sure sign that our bodies are telling us that they don’t like something.

I don’t know about you, but I want to change out all my household cleaners for something I know is safe and non-toxic. Having already struggled with sever eczema all over my body, I really don’t want to add to skin irritants and chemicals to my cleaning routine, let alone breathing in bad things in my own home while simply cleaning my bathroom.

Did you know this interesting fact?
“Unlike in Europe, which bans more than 1,300 chemicals from use in lotions, soaps, toothpaste, cosmetics and other personal care products. The U.S. bans 11.” -Dr. Julia Brody (Executive Director of the Silent Spring Institute, a non-profit organization researching connections between environmental toxins and women’s health)

Now just imagine the different high-level amounts of chemicals/toxins in our cleaning supplies here in the U.S. that are not monitored! What?!? No thanks!

Thieves essential oil

Young Living’s proprietary Thieves® essential oil blend was inspired by the legend of four 15th-century French thieves who formulated and wore a special aromatic combination of clove, rosemary, vinegar, and other botanicals that they believed provided protection while they were stealing. French authorities recognized that there was such value in this mixture that upon the thieves’ capture, they received a more merciful punishment on condition that they divulge the ingredients in their secret formula.

Crafted in the spirit of that legendary combination, Young Living’s one-of-a-kind Thieves blend can be found in all of our Thieves products. Featuring the powerful essential oils Lemon, Clove, Cinnamon Bark, Eucalyptus Radiata, and Rosemary, Thieves imparts a spicy, welcoming aroma everywhere it’s used. Possibly our most versatile and beloved blend, Thieves is an important ingredient in our home cleaning and personal care products, replacing harsh chemicals with pure, therapeutic-grade essential oils and other naturally derived ingredients.

Lemon oil

Lemon oil is one of the happiest of happy oils. The lemon oil from Young Living is cold pressed.

Fun fact! It takes 75 lemons to make one 15ml bottle. Crazy huh?

Lemon invigorates the mind and body by supporting the nervous system, it cleans your bodily systems, supports proper nasal function, and supports healthy respiratory function. Basically, it wins for best supporting role in your body’s film. We use the vitality oil to flavor and enhance water, and it’s a perfect replacement for lemon juice or seasoning to flavor seafood, vegetables, beverages or desserts.

Lemon contains the powerful constituent d-limonene, which I highly recommend you Google real quick

And another fun one; we use it to remove sticky residue from stickers, or to remove crayon/pen marks from walls or other things. Good ole family fun for everyone!

I also use it to clean my fruit and veggies! Put one-two drops in a sink full of water. Then plop the produce in. So easy and cleans a whole bunch at once!
Peppermint essential oil

Peppermint essential oil is very versatile in its uses. There are lots of options for promoting healthy digestion, focus and clarity by supporting the nervous system etc. as well as helpful in the home uses to repel bugs and spiders, and keep your home smelling fresh and clean. Peppermint is also antibacterial, so it is useful for cleaning and wiping down surfaces, and disinfecting germs from everyday life.

Below are some useful recipes to try at home.

Combine 1/2 cup rubbing alcohol with 1/4 cup of fresh lemon juice and 10 drops of peppermint oil in a glass spray bottle. Spray around the perimeter of your gathering or play area. Bugs don’t like the intense smell of lemon or mint so it acts a natural barrier.

Freshen up the sent of any DIY cleaners by adding 7-10 drops of peppermint essential oil.

Diffuse 3 drops of peppermint essential oil and 2 drops of lemon essential oil for a refreshing clean smelling home.
Lavender essential oil

Referred to as the Swiss Army Knife of oils it has an incredibly soothing and refreshing aroma. So we use it for winding down and relaxing before bedtime. It goes in my night time diffuser every night. Sometimes I put it with frankincense, sometimes northern lights black spruce, or cedarwood.

You can also make a spray out of it. Just grab a glasses spray bottle and some water. You can add other oils as well. If you purchase a premium starter kit this month you will get peace and calming. This blends great with lavender for a sheet and pillow spray! I have lavender and cedarwood in my spray.

We diffuse it to create a calming and comforting atmosphere whenever we need it.

I recommend adding it to your favorite hair, body and beauty products for some longer lashes, better hair, all sorts of pretty results.

It’s soothing to the skin if accidents happen. Add it to Epsom salts for a relaxing bath. The list goes on! Feel free to check out Google and Pinterest for more ideas on how to use lavender!
Purification essential oil blend

Let me start off with saying that I LOVE purification essential oil. It has done wonders for me and my home and car and clothes etc. Its blend is made up of citronella, lemongrass, rosemary, melaleuca alternifolia, lavender, and myrtle.

There are several uses for Purification. My hands down favorite thing to use it for is getting rid of nasty smells. My husband and I bought a used vehicle for a second car to get around in, but unfortunately it came with a disgusting smell. The previous owner had had their dog in there all the time…which left teeth marks in the door handles and a nasty wet dog, mildew, stale smell clinging to the car material.

Needless to say I HAD to get rid of the nasty smell in our new car before I could bring myself to ride in it. For those of you who know me, I have a pretty sensitive sense of smell. Let me tell you how happy I was to remember my essential oils in this car cleaning process, and the super big smile on my face when I got into to car with all those icky smells that seemed to have vanished after spraying a bit of Purification around.

You can use Purification for:

Diffusing to slaughter odors in your home.
Killing mildew smelling clothes by placing the item in a Ziploc bag with a cotton ball that has 1-2 drops of Purification.
Placing a cotton ball with Purification in your vents around the home.
Hanging a piece of cedar wood with Purification oil on it in your car as a freshener.
Placing a few drops on a washcloth and throwing it in the laundry with a smelly load.
While chopping onions open the bottle of Purification and keep it near by to keep the tears from coming.
Smelly dishwasher? Add 1-2 drops in your dishwasher soap dispenser along with the soap.

Other useful cleaning essential oils

Citrus Fresh – Citrus Fresh oil is a perfect replacement for chemical-based home fragrances—just combine a few drops with distilled water in a spray bottle and spritz throughout rooms and closets and over linens. You’ll enjoy the uplifting citrusy scent every time you make the bed or open a closet door. Looking for a little extra citrus boost? Dilute with V-6™ Vegetable Oil Complex and use it as cologne or perfume! Plus, using Citrus Fresh topically comes with the bonus benefit of the citrus oils working together to tone and smooth the appearance of skin.

Orange – A great replacement for Lemon oil if you’ve run out and still need to get that sticky stuff off!

Grapefruit – Amazing smelling addition to any DIY cleaning project. Also a great additive to freshen up your water that you’ll be drinking from all that hefty spring cleaning (When using essential oils in water, always make sure to drink from glass and shake well to mix up the oil).

Tea Tree – Mold and mildew killer, Antifungal and a clean scent. Try a mixture of two teaspoons of tea tree oil to two cups of water. It kills a wide range of mold types. Mix and spray – but don’t rinse. There’s a strong smell, but wait it out! In a few days, the smell will fade along with your mold issue. Be sure to label the mixture and save it for the next time you have a mold problem.

Eucalyptus – this is a great scent for soaps and cleaning. Add a few drops to your DIY laundry soap for a refreshing and clean scent. It is also commonly used in hand soap and bar soap to eliminate dirty smells and cleanse.

Diffusing to deodorize and humidify

Sometimes you just need some humidity in the home and good scents floating around. Diffusing different essential oil blends not only has physical, emotional, and mental benefits, but it also can eliminate odors and help to get rid of the dry chapping air.

Here are some great spring blends to diffuse:

2 drops Lavender, 2 drops Lemon, 2 drops Peppermint

3 drops Citrus Fresh, 2 Drops Lavender

3 drops Orange or Tangerine, 2 drops Lemon

Next, let’s talk about what each oil in your Dewdrop Premium Starter Kit (PSK) does:

Thieves. It’s called the healthy-keeper. It helps kill airborne yuckies, boosts immunity, makes our digestive systems work their best, and is just the greatest. I LOVE using Thieves Vitality for a yummy immune boosting tea in the fall.

Purification. It gets rid of bad odors and airborne yuckies as well. It feels amazing rubbed on the outside of your throat, especially during this time of year.

Copaiba (pronounced co-pie-ee-ba). It supports the body’s response to injury/irritation, and it is a driving oil (enhances other oils!). It regulates natural immune responses, can be soothing, and promotes a youthful appearance from the inside out.

Frankincense. The fact that this oil is in the kit is amazing! It’s adds insane value! Basically it does anything and everything you can think of when it comes to supporting your body’s health. It is Incredible for your skin and immune system. It eases occasional and minor tension and promotes feelings of calmness and balance. (And it was given to baby Jesus as a gift).

R.C.. This stands for respiratory comfort. It contains 3 different kids of eucalyptus oils, which have naturally occurring eucalyptol (really good stuff–google it). It inspires and uplifts before working out, and it creates a comforting environment, especially when your body is feeling down.

DiGize. Yep, like digestion. It supports a super healthy digestive system, alleviates nausea and upset/sour stomach, great for occasional irregularity or upset tummies, relief from occasional heartburn. Basically it’s your tummy’s new best friend.

Lemon. You can use lemon to naturally highlight hair, maintain energy levels, and it helps oily skin, calluses, cellulite, and to detox your body.

Stress Away. Exactly what it says. We roll it onto our wrists and the back of our necks anytime we want it. It smells amazing! Mommas, teachers, business owners, nurses, basically anyone who has stress in your life, you need this oil.

Peppermint. Peppermint helps me enjoy the changes in seasons, and it soothes occasional head tension. It supports digestive systems and promotes proper nasal and respiratory function! Love this stuff.

Panaway. For all that “PAN” you want to go away Basically it offers so many types of relief. Helps with occasional head discomfort, everyday joint and muscle soreness, etc.

Lavender. This oil has been deemed “the Swiss Army knife of essential oils.” We use it for enjoying the changes in seasons. It’s great for relaxation, sleepy cream, a calm environment for kids, and dry/chapped/irritated skin. Basically EVERYTHING!
