It’s been a long time since I’ve actually had the time to sit in some quiet for a moment and write a post here. So sorry friends!
My sweet son, Mathias, who was born in September, is nearly 5 month old already! The sleeplessness of motherhood is in full swing and I just thought I’d take some time to catch up on here, as life never really seems to slow down.
So bear with me as I write through tired eyelids and a toddler refusing to nap.
This month my family and I have begun the GAPS protocol for healing the gut. Gut and Physiology Syndrome (GAPS) is a book written by Dr. Natasha McBride and covers ways to eat to heal the gut. I thought I’d talk about how it’s worked for me in the past with my eczema and how it’s been a big part of my wellness journey.
Along with using Young Living essential oils and products, eliminating toxins in my home, herbs and homeopathic remedies, etc. GAPS has been a process that I’ve been so thankful for, as it has helped me to heal to a point where I never thought I’d be.
As I’ve written previously, I first broke out from head to toe in miserable eczema in the end of 2012. My skin was so bad that my mom and I decided to eliminate food and just strictly follow the GAPS protocol for a while. My skin got worse before it got better, but after a few months of staying on GAPS my skin was beginning to clear up to a point where I could function.
I was on GAPS for about 2 years, on and off. I never truly followed it to a t except for the first 6 months, which I am convinced is what helped my gut and microbes to heal and change to the point of almost normal skin 2 years later.
Did you know your skin is your largest organ? The human body is amazing! Well, 10 years later and it’s time for me to heal my gut some more. 10 years is a lot of time to absorb toxins. Toxins are all around us. In the air we breath and water we drink, to the clothes we bring home from the store and even especially in the food we eat.
GAPS is a protocol designed to heal the gut wall. The gut wall is made up of microbes; living fungi etc that we pick up from all around us. In our guy wall are enterocytes. Enterocytes are like small fingers that grab food that is put into our bodies and tell it where to go/how to be digested. When we feed our bodies with things that bad microbes thrive on, our enterocytes become disabled, more like little nubs instead of fingers, unable to grab food in our system. The result is food slipping past these enterocytes and not being digested properly, causing all kinds of sensitivities and symptoms.
My skin has been slowly getting worse in the past few months, and it reminded me of how I have more healing to do. So let’s jot down the basics of the GAPS protocol.
•Eliminate foods that your bad microbes thrive on (things like sugars and grains and starches)
•Eat/drink gut healing meat stock from only organic/hormone free meats (non-organic defeats the nutrient dense purpose)
•Feed your body with nutrient dense and mineral rich foods, fermented foods and vegetables.
These are all things that feed your gut wall with things that will help re-grow those enterocytes, to then help digest foods properly.
Keep in mind that not only food can effect our gut wall. Environmental factors play a huge roll as well. Stress, pharmaceuticals, personal care products etc. can all lead to damaged enterocytes. So, it is important to work on eliminating toxins in your everyday environment as well to truly heal the gut wall (this is the reason I started using Young Living products, because of how easy it made this elimination process).
Okay so those are the very basics. I guess all of that was just a long winded way of telling you what I’ve been up to, and how much I’ve still got to work on this wellness thing.
That’s why it’s called a journey right? Because you never really come to the end but rather new beginnings with so much opportunity to learn.
