Toxins In Makeup

Did you realize that there are several ingredients in cosmetics that are harmful to your body? I sure didn’t. The EU bans over 1,100 chemicals and the us only has about 10 banned chemicals used in cosmetics. For me, that’s kind of a red flag!

Let’s talk about some of these harmful ingredients. A.K.A. toxins.

PARABENS: (Methyl, propyl, ethyl, butyl). Parabens are used as preservatives in cosmetics and actually mimics estrogen which in turn has hormone disruption effects and can cause developmental and reproductive toxicity.

TALC: Talc can be contaminated with asbestos fibers, posing risks for respiratory toxicity and cancer. Some cosmetics that have talc free of asbestos in it is usually a form of magnesium silicate that also can be toxic and carcinogenic. YIKES!

BISMUTH: Bismuth can actually contain heavy metals and is a skin irritant. This ingredient can cause breakouts and allergies, as well as cause reproductive damage to the organs.

SYNTHETIC DYES: (names with Lake or CI followed by numbers) These dies happen to be in A LOT of make-up out there, especially make-up that is bright and colorful. Bright colored lipgloss and lipstick are a big source for synthetic dyes, which can also build up toxins which cause cancer. D&C Red 6 is a synthetic dye produced from petroleum or coal tar sources; this dye is FDA-approved for use in cosmetics, and has a hazard for causing cancer. NO THANK YOU!

PETROLEUM BYPRODUCTS: These can be carcinogens found in cosmetics. Petroleum is a semisolid mixture of hydrocarbons obtained form petroleum, and gas a contamination concern, as well as system toxicity (reproductive issues). Talk about SCARY!

You can go to the Environmental Working Group Skin Deep Database and type in all of these ingredients and you would find that the information above is accurate.

There are even KNOWN carcinogens in mainstream make-up used today in America. Read more about it here.

I don’t know about you, but I want none of that yuck going on my body let alone on my loved ones.
